When our client contacted us saying she had found an original Henderson Surrey that she was purchasing into her collection, we were excited to have the opportunity to restore such a historic piece. MP Henderson and Sons was a famous stagecoach builder in Stockton, California, and although they built many stagecoaches, a surrey built by this company is a rare find.
We started the restoration process by removing the existing upholstery and stripping the paint. Although the wheels were needing to be rebuilt, the wood on the body was in excellent condition. Once we got down to the bare wood, we realized that this was an opportunity to give the surrey a "natural" wood finish that would highlight the intricate detailing on the side of the body. Our client readily agreed and loved the idea of a more "western" look for this surrey. The lazy-back seat and angular body give this surrey a sporty style and the side-bar suspension lends to its airy appearance. Upholstered in genuine leather with a falling bow top, this is a classic vehicle. The wood beam brake is an efficient system borrowed from the stagecoach.
