Commonly used on hitchwagons, the spreader bar keeps the pole strap off the horses' inside leg as well as keeps the pole strap centered while backing the wagon. It also provides some stability in aiming the pole. The disadvantages of using a spreader bar are that it limits the vertical motion of a stiff pole on rough ground. It can also restrains the horse or takes away some freedom of moment. A galloping horse can also get a leg over it. For this reason, the spreader bar is not utilized as often for stagecoaches or chuck wagon racing.
