This western-style mud wagon, built by J.P. Henderson, is one of the key historic pieces in the Santa Barbara Carriage Museum. When we visited with the members of the historic society, we found they had several factors to consider. Foremost was the preservation of the original components of the stagecoach, however, they were also wanting it to be sound enough that the mud wagon could be used in the yearly parade held in Santa Barbara.
We started by removing the original upholstery and keeping it as a pattern for the replacement leather. All wood components were evaluated and replaced or repaired if necessary. The original wheels were "sound" enough that we were able to simply repair the hubs and a couple felloes. Original paint was documented and the coach was repainted except for one of the front body panels. We preserved the original paint as well as the striping and lettering on this particular panel. A special "stain" technique was used to blend the new paint with the old. The wood and leather components of the front and back boots were completely replaced. The restoration was hailed as a grand success at the following year's Fiesta Historical Parade.
