History:

This type of surrey was built by the Joubert & White Company of Glens Falls, New York, and is sometimes referred to as a "Glens Falls buckboard." This style of vehicle was also used in the Glens Falls, New York, Adirondack region, as well as in Yellowstone Park. Vehicles of this type would have been available to small private parties touring the park.

Joubert & White began manufacturing high-grade buckboards in Glens Falls, NY, in 1865. They were the innovators and inventors of a famous model known for its advanced suspension system, which was sought after by many wealthy individuals both in the U.S. and abroad. Notable owners of this style of Buckboard Surrey included Cornelius Vanderbilt, John Jacob Astor, J. Pierpont Morgan, Louis Tiffany, Spencer Trask, Andrew Carnegie, and John D. Rockefeller.

A standard buckboard was constructed by running two wooden planks between the front and rear axles and mounting the passenger seat body on top. The only shock absorption came from the flexibility of the planks, meaning that passengers riding on rough roads felt like they were on a bucking horse—hence the name "buckboard."

Joubert devised a way to attach two steel leaf springs, bowed upwards, to the planks, with the passenger seat mounted on top. This innovation allowed the seats to move vertically on the springs and rock forward and backward, creating a much more cushioned ride. In 1880, Joubert patented his suspension design.

Joubert & White produced approximately 50 carriage and sleigh models, all considered to be of superior quality. While a standard buggy would sell for $50 to $75, a Joubert & White buckboard could cost anywhere from $500 to $800—with customized versions reaching $1,000 or more.

Q&A

Question: How do you ship this vehicle to me?

Answer: We coordinate shipments of large freight items - such as our wagons, carriages, and coaches - within a network of private carriers so that your freight is safely transported to your destination without transfer. These are usually coordinated as partial loads in order to save costs, so it can take anywhere between 2 days to 2 weeks to find a ride. They will be transported in enclosed vans that vary from "U-Haul" size box vans to full 53' semi trailers. Contact us for more information and freight quotes. You may also arrange your own shipping through uship.com.

Question: How do I offload this vehicle at delivery?

Answer: If you have a delivery location with a loading dock available this is your best option. However, we can also deliver to any location that a semi-trailer can access. We then recommend coordination with a towing service to use a tilt-bed wrecker truck. The vehicle can be rolled off the trailer on to the bed of the wrecker truck and it will be tilted/lowered down to the ground from there.
