The Artistry of the Blacksmith

Posted by SHOP PROJECT on Sep 2nd 2020

If it is important to preserve the products of past crafts, it is equally important to preserve the crafts themselves.

Blacksmithing is one of the oldest crafts in the world and has probably done more to change the world than any other craft. It was the smith that spread the use of iron across the lands and contributed to the settling of this "New World" by making and repairing all forms of devices for transportation.

The craft was usually passed down from generation to generation, but the industrial revolution temporarily contributed to the demise of smithing and the depression wiped out even the best studios.

Fortunately, there are those who are dedicated to preserving the culture of the blacksmith. Art schools are once again offering courses in iron forging, foundations provide grants for craft programs and we have a buying public that appreciates the individuality and beauty of good hand workmanship.

The Artist-Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and sharing technical skills and design excellence in the blacksmith community. They offer education, workshops, technical and art publications, grants, awards, conferences, and exhibitions honoring the metal arts.

ABANA's primary function is that of education both within the blacksmith community and beyond. The ABANA National Curriculum is an educational path that teaches, evaluates, and certifies blacksmiths in traditional forging skills as well as instructors.

"I write this book as a place for you to start, I hope I bring you ideas and questions that you will further investigate for yourself. Keep in mind that what you find in these pages are the ways that I learned and are not the only solutions. Keep your mind open to other possibilities. Also remember that it takes time and practice to learn anything. Meanwhile enjoy the journey as you...KEEP THE SPARKS A'FLYING!!"

(Excerpt from A Blacksmithing Primer by Randy McDaniel)
